Exploring Autism - Late Diagnosis

We recently hosted an event exploring late autism diagnosis from a lived-experience perspective.

The event covered a range of topics, including:

  • What is autism?: Exploring different understandings of autism and perspectives that go beyond the DSM.

  • Why might someone receive an autism diagnosis later in life?: Looking at factors that can contribute to late diagnosis.

  • Intersectionality and masking: Discussing how factors such as race, gender, sexuality, disability, and other aspects of identity can shape people's experiences of autism and the diagnostic process.

  • Assessment and diagnosis: Exploring some of the limitations of current assessment approaches and how these can contribute to people being overlooked or misidentified.

  • Support after late diagnosis: Discussing what support can look like for people who are diagnosed or identify as autistic later in life.

  • Lived experiences: There was also time for participants to share their own experiences, ask questions, and connect with others.

You can watch the event recording here and view the PowerPoint slides here.

If you found this event useful, please consider supporting our nonprofit with a donation. Your support helps us continue creating educational resources, hosting community events, and providing support for autistic people and their communities.

If you are late diagnosed/identified and are looking for community, we'd love to have you join us!
