April is Autism Acceptance / Awareness Month

April is Autism Acceptance Month!

There are many different titles for this month, from Autism Acceptance Month, Autism Awareness Month, to World Autism Month. Additionally, World Autism Awareness Day is April 2nd. Know that there are different opinions within the Autistic community (defined as solely those who identify as Autistic) about this month. Know that annual recognization of this month was not started by the Autistic community. However, many of us in the community have chosen to support our community and spread acceptance/awareness of what it means to be Autistic during April. Some prefer the term acceptance, some prefer awareness, some prefer to not recognize this month altogether due to its history, and some prefer to celebrate their pride during Autistic Pride Day in June.

Regardless of what you decide to do/say during this month, be sure you are receiving information from Autistic voices! Below are some ways to support the Autistic community during this month.

Support Autistic-Led Organizations

If you would like to donate to a nonprofit this month, donate to an organization supported by Autistic individuals! Look through their board members and staff to ensure that the organization has input from the community they’re serving.
